Travel in 2026: REAL ID Enforcement and Airline Policy Updates

As travel continues to grow in 2026, travelers should be aware of several important updates that may impact domestic air travel in the United States. One of the most significant changes is the enforcement of REAL ID requirements at airport security checkpoints.

Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began enforcing REAL ID rules for domestic flights. This means travelers must present a REAL ID–compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport or trusted traveler card, to board a domestic flight. Travelers without proper identification may face delays or be denied access through security.

Looking ahead, beginning February 1, 2026, TSA will introduce an additional identity verification option called TSA Confirm.ID. This program allows travelers who arrive at the airport without acceptable identification to verify their identity for a $45 fee, enabling them to proceed through security. TSA recommends travelers prepare in advance to avoid unexpected delays or added costs.

These changes are part of broader efforts to improve airport security and streamline identity verification nationwide. Travelers are encouraged to check their identification well before traveling and allow extra time at the airport, especially during peak travel periods.
